I always wrote my poetry from the heart, no matter how deeply steeped in metaphor or deliberately distorted.

You told me you don’t do that. That your poetry is written like a game, an experiment or a jigsaw puzzle. It’s about invention for you. This is one of your sore points – one of those few things to irritate you – people’s impressive ability to reinterpret your poetry in relation to yourself.

I find this interesting. I invent stories. I invent fiction. But the things I think and write about come from somewhere. They have a meaning, they are designed to communicate my feelings and ideas. They’re a vehicle which I use to explore parts of myself. Things that have happened. Things I’d like or like not to happen. Things I think about happening.

So when you say your poems aren’t personal, I’m confused. If they have nothing to do with you, do they spring out of the air? Are they the random collaborations of similar words? So, Mr Writer, where do you get those ideas from?

Of course they come from somewhere. You should listen to your heart more.
