Aftermath

Monday, 6th of January 2003, I returned to work after recovering from my DVT. I asked the boss if I could speak to him. I quit my job there and then, and they agreed to let me work my notice from home so they wouldn’t have to buy me a leg rest.

My system never got redesigned in .NET. It still isn’t fully automated, so they have guys writing reports by hand just like me. It’s sad really, because I was 90% of the way through having something written that would have done everything for them. No writing new reports, no setting up new pages, it would all have come from the database. They could still do it if they showed some initiative. A good programmer’s job is to make their role obsolete so they can go on to do new things. Maybe if this happened now I would have done things differently, been more assertive and talked to the management more.

The new support ticket system was ready to use and someone took over the job of making the minor changes necessary for it to go live. But a middle manageress quashed it with impossible demands. It too has gone the way of all things. Insight never gained from all the hard work I put in to try to prove myself to them. I never gained from it either. But I have learnt my lesson. I know where my priorities are now.
